My rant today has to do with this article below:
If you read the post, all the way down towards the end, the author pretty much states that this new so-called trend of Stay at Home Moms having food blogs are "dumbing down" the culinary profession and food journalism.
She also states that she has a problem with certain companies contacting amateur bloggers to help them advertise their products and states that (and I quote in her words):
" it makes my skin crawl a little to think that advertising dollars that could have helped sustain high quality food writing and recipe development, (not just Gourmet, but the great food writing and stunning photography newspapers and other magazines have lost to cutbacks), is going to people with a hobby and probably too much time on their hands."
Well let's see.....
I am a Stay at Home Mom. This is a food blog. And companies have contacted me to help with advertising their products.
Sounds to me she is a little jealous ;)
All things aside, she obviously does not have children. Because if she did, she would not think that us Stay at Home Moms have 'free time' on our hands and that we are using our blog to fill up our free hours.
My children are 4 and almost 6. When I started this blog back in 2009, they were 1 and 3. My free time was vastly limited back then and even though they are older now, my free time is still limited to a degree. Anyone who has children, YOUNG children at that, will tell you that it takes a HUGE amount of work to raise them...whether you work outside the home or not.
Add on the fact that I am still struggling with my health issues and that we are a Military family who have absolutely NO family around to help us out when we need them , my free time is seriously few and far between these days.
If you take all that I have mentioned above....and combine it with doing what it takes to keep up with this blog....the cooking, the photography, the writing of the posts, etc... where is my free time?? Heck, to tell everyone the truth, I struggle to keep this blog up and running on some days. Seriously...I do. And there are days when I want to just throw in the towel and delete this whole entire thing.
But I don't.
But I don't.
Granted, this is all strictly voluntary and no one is forcing me to do any of it. However, I will not take it down or delete it because it is my safe-haven for when my life gets stressful. When I have had to much of "mommy, mommy, mommy" and "honey where are my keys" (as Husband Man tends to ask alot) and "your child's school project is due on so and so date"....I turn to this blog to get me away from all of that. Everyone has a vice...for some it's drinking, for others it's exercising and chocolate...for me, it's this.
As far as companies contacting me go, I do not seek them out. Any company I have ever worked with in the past has approached me first. And who am I to turn them down?? If I believe in their products and if I feel it's something my readers will enjoy, I am all for helping them get the word out. I will not stop doing this.
In my opinion, the companies are doing things right. I am sure numerous amounts of research goes into who they will approach to help with advertisement. And who better then to help get the word out about their products then mothers themselves (stay at home AND working)?
My recipes are taste tested by the most important critics in this household, my family :) I would never put anything on this blog that would not pass inspection from the three blessings in my life. I don't just post recipes just to post them and be done with it all. Every single recipe that is posted on this blog are meals and treats that I have personally made.
If I receive the recipe from someone or obtain it from a cookbook or website, I always be sure to state it either in the title, in the post itself, or will put it under the "Recipe Source" sentence at the end. I always give credit where it is due.
I have never claimed to be a 5 star gourmet chef. I have never claimed to have worked in the finest restaurants where the elite of the elite go to dine every night. I'm just a simple minded, down to earth, wife and mommy who enjoys cooking, baking, and writing....and sharing it on here. If you want to read, awesome. Welcome to the blog. If you don't....there's a little "x" in the top right corner of your screen ;)

Bottom Line:
Mommy food bloggers are here to stay (stay at home ones and working ones) so I think people need to start getting used to that ;) We look up to all those who are in the culinary industry and look at them as the one's who have paved the road for us. We all just need to get along and remember that it's not about who isn't a trained chef or who doesn't make the 4 course dinners. It's about the food and about making cherished memories. At least it is for me ;)
~End of Rant~

WELL SAID! I am not a blogger of any kind.....just a "foodblogaholic". I love the blogs, the recipes, the photos and the comments. If I wanted a recipe from a trained chef, I would google them. Most of the time, their recipes are too complicated and contain items I have never heard of or plan to use. Yet, the food blogs have recipes from your typical home and ones that everyone would love to eat. For me, "I cook, therefore I am". Keep it up Libby, we love the blog.
ReplyDeleteI can honestly say that I cook a whole lot more since I discovered food blogs. I love them! And my husband and four kids sure do love my food and the variety of food I cook now too.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry about that article. You are doing great and maybe they are jealous.
PS: I am the wife of retired military man who managed to work some duty stations, stay home others, raise 2 sons (mostly alone), and always have home cooked meals and desserts for all the neighborhood kids and friends.
ReplyDeleteLibby let me just say this to you....I NEVER make a recipe that I haven't seen on one of my foodie friend's blog or on Pinterest that doesn't have some type of feed back and who better to give feedback about a particular recipe than a Mom like me that has little time to prepare meals but wants healthy, wholesome and delicious food so when a food blogger says this recipe was delicious but time consuming I know that if I want to make it, that it will have to be on a day when I am not running into the house to throw dinner together so that I can run out again to a sporting event or other obligation that I have in my evening hours with the kids. I am a full-time worker but my MAIN job is my kids and I like to cook for them so I appreciate the food bloggers like yourself that let me know numerous recipes that have worked for them and their kids. This woman clearly is a corporate woman who probably doesn't have kids and goes home every night to a glass of wine and a bubble bath, both things that are non-existent in my world!! Don't you dare take this blog down, I for one look forward to reading your food and your non-food post and I love making your dishes.....:) I hope you have a GREAT day Libby and I wouldn't give this person another thought!! <3
ReplyDeleteWell said!
ReplyDeleteIf what they say is true, maybe the home cook isn't deserving of manufacturer's coupons and products since we're not cooking for a fancy restaurant. Too bad it's not against the law to.be stupid.
All I can say about that person is "Bless their heart!"!
Libby clearly this person has no clue what it is like to be a stay at home Mom or a Mom in general if she is writing such rhetoric. I am a full-time outside worker but I depend on your blog and other food friend blogs to tell give me recipes that I can make for my kids that are healthy, wholesome and sometimes just delicious recipes. I NEVER make a recipe that I haven't found on one of my foodie friend's blog or Pinterest that has some type of feedback on it so that I can make informed decisions about what I plan to spend my time making. For instance if a foodie friend says this recipe was delicious but time consuming that would let me know if I am going to make it that I will have to do it on a day when I am not skidding into the house with one hour to spare to cook dinner and feed it to my family before dashing back out the door to run here or there doing this or that for the kids or myself. I would not pay this woman one more second of your time, she probably is one of those corporate woman that goes home every night and has a glass of wine and a bubble bath while stopping on her way home to get a mani-pedi all things of which are few and far between for me....Anddd one last thing don't you dare take this blog down, I enjoy reading your food and non-food related posts and look forward to all the treats and dishes you prepare and share with us....Have a GREAT day and don't give this IDIOT another thought:) <3
ReplyDeleteI enjoy reading your blog and trying some of your recipes. thank you for all you do Betty Reece
ReplyDeleteShoot, I think some food bloggers have better writing than the other, "real" writers. My kitchen skills have greatly improved over the last year or so, and it has little to do with gourmet magazine and more to do with a community of people you can relate to encouraging one another. Not a stay at home mom, but I will be when I have kids, and in no way do I think you have free time on your hands anymore than anybody else. Have this lady ever been around children? Clearly not, or only from a distance.
ReplyDeleteI like your blog! I have near zero cooking skills, so I like reading and learning about cooking through your blog and others like your blog. Please continue on with your blog!

This woman obviously does not have a clue. I have a child and work full time. Blogs like yours have made me a better cook and my husband a much happier man. Thank you for the time and effort you put in to your blog!
ReplyDeleteWOW! I wish I was there to confront this person....
ReplyDeleteI am a FOOD BLOGGER and I am PROUD to be one!

In my opinion, some of the best food blogs are by "stay at home moms", because they cook family pleasing meals. Given the choice, my family would choose a comfy casserole or a yummy bbq recipe, over a 5 star recipe any day. Keep up the good work, Libby!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog! Please dont change anything! =)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Rebecca, I would rather see "down home" cooking ( and easy to do recipes ) than 5 star meals any day!
Wow! All of y'all rock!! This blog definitely WILL NOT be going anywhere. It warms my heart to see such wonderful online support from everyone ;) It's you, the readers, who make this blog what it is ;) <3 y'all!!
ReplyDeleteWow...love it!! I for one do hope you stick around. Just happened to find you from the Southern Food Bloggers site and love it! Love this post and so well said. Boy, I could get on my soap box about this issue. I love great professional magazines and wonderful cookbooks...but lets face it I have had more home practice than many of the professional types and could compete head to head any day. Many of the tested recipes they claim are tested and fool proof well I guess I am a fool cause I for one have had several duds! I have seen so many typos as well ~ tested and retested NOT! I love the blogs and seeing great ideas many are better than the latest publications out there so you home cooks throw your hat in the ring.... lets see what cha got! I do believe some just have talent and some have a great love which in many cases surpasses education many days. You can not teach passion.....or the love of pleasing family with a wonderful home cooked meal. Love the site will be following along! Angie at Angies Southern Kitchen a food blogger
ReplyDeleteDitto Angela! And welcome to the blog ;) You really can't teach passion :)
